Chapter 9.

W ith a groan, Julia flung her arm across her eyes as bright morning sunlight crept across her pillow. She cautiously cracked open one eyelid and quickly closed it again as a furious, pounding headache slammed against her forehead.

“Oh my god...” Julia gasped; her mouth as dry as cotton wool.

“I don't think god wants much to do with you today.” came an amused voice from the other side of the bed.

Julia squinted against the pain radiating through her eyeballs.

“Belle? What are you doing here?”

“Making sure you didn't aspirate your own vomit, like any good friend should. Especially after the display you put on last night.” Isobel pushed a cup of coffee into Julia's hands. “Drink that, you'll feel better.”

Julia raised the mug to her mouth, took a sniff and hurriedly set the cup down on the bed side table, sloshing coffee everywhere.

“Oh, oh..” covering her mouth with both hands she stumbled out of bed and haphazardly down the hallway to the bathroom.

“You still alive in there?” Isobel peered around the corner of the door a few minutes later after the retching had stopped to see Julia lying on the floor, face pressed against the cold tiles.

“Don't look at me, don't talk to me and don't touch me.” Julia mumbled miserably. “Just let me die here in peace.”

“Sure, let me know when you've finished dying. I'll make a start on the clean-up.”

Julia lay there for a bit longer, the coolness from the tiles seeping through her clothes, into her skin and through her veins. She could feel the thud of her heartbeat on the inside of her ribs. Closing her eyes, Julia let herself be lulled by her pulse for a moment before attempting to get up.

Twenty minutes later, after a hot shower and some painkillers, Julia joined Isobel in the kitchen, where her friend was wiping down counter tops.

“Wow, you look bloody rough.” Isobel commented.

“I feel like complete shit. How much did I drink last night?”

“You more or less chugged down a whole bottle of red on your own and then you and Bron started on shots of some kind.” Isobel told her. “It was not pretty.”

Julia hung her head. “Sorry.”

As a rule, she was not a big drinker, and never really had been. And the way she was feeling at that moment was enough to make her swear off alcohol for the rest of her life.

Isobel put her arm around Julia and led her over to the sofa.

“Come on, sit down. It's not that bad. Everyone had a good night.”

“Except for Sophie.” Julia said, misery rising. Up until then she had felt so physically awful that she had been able to ignore the memory of Sophie's aghast expression and subsequent departure. Now, with her headache beginning to fade somewhat and her stomach settled for the time being, that memory came rushing back.

“Well, yes I guess so.” Isobel said shortly. She rubbed Julia's back. “I gather Sophie didn't leave because her son was sick, then?”

Julia rolled her eyes at Isobel.
